A railway is measured twice: once by its operating performance, and once by what the passenger actually experiences. Rahul Himalian’s career has been spent on both sides of that measurement — in the operating and commercial departments of two zonal railways, and in the corporation responsible for ticketing, catering, packaged drinking water and rail tourism.

One of the organised Group A services of Indian Railways. Its officers hold the operating and commercial responsibilities of the system — train running and pathing, terminal and yard working, and freight and passenger business.
Indian Railways is administered through zones. Rahul Himalian’s zonal service has been on the Western Railway and the South Eastern Railway, two zones with distinct traffic characters.
Railway officers are frequently deputed to the railways’ public sector enterprises, carrying operating discipline into commercial organisations. He has served three such engagements with IRCTC.

Navratna classification confers a defined degree of operational and financial autonomy on a central public sector enterprise, within the framework set by its administrative ministry.
A whole-time functional director sits on the board and simultaneously carries executive charge of departments — a role that combines governance with day-to-day administration.
